Yealey Families,

I hope everyone had a great week.  It has been an amazing week here at school.  Last night's Evening With The Arts was fantastic and such a great way to showcase all the talent your kids have.  Last week's Missoula Theater performance was also amazing.  I love seeing kids shine in the arts!  The chorus (which is about 20% of our students!), toured the community entertaining everyone with their beautiful voices.

We have been busy taking our mid-year assessments. So, far I have only looked at 3rd - 5th math and the results look really good.  We are on track for making gains in mathematics.  I love seeing them work mathematics problems but I love even more when I see them applying those skills and knowledge to real world situations.

With snow in the forecast, please remember that it is time to start watching for school closings and delays.  I will do an all-call as soon as I receive the information from district office.  But this system is not fool proof. As Blackboard is updated through Infinite Campus sometimes there are errors.  Please make a habit of checking two places.  The news channels should show Boone County Schools closed sometimes before I get the call - (I think because it might go in ABC order and with T as my last name I think I get calls later in the cycle from district).  Boone County Schools also puts it on their web-page and social media outlets as soon as they make the decision.  We also try to put it on our social media.  As parents it is important for you to have a system of checking when conditions look like it's a possibility and a plan you can put in place for your children as soon as you find out.  Also, please help spread the word!  We quite often have students who are brought in to school or at a bus stop when schools are closed or delayed.  So, the better we spread the word, the better off for our whole community!

Thank you to the PTA and all the volunteers for the Santa Shop this week.  I think there are lots of fun treats ready to be shared at home!

Next Friday I will not update the blog.  From experience I know that I will be very busy enjoying the kids and spending time with them before the long break.  I hope you all have a wonderful break and enjoy the holidays.  School resumes on January 6th.

Hi Yealey Families,

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving break.  I love that break and a holiday focused around being grateful.  It is one of my favorite times of the year.

We hit the ground running when we got back to school.  We have started our mid-year benchmark assessments. We use this data to check our progress and make plans for the second half of the year.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on our student led conferences.  We received very positive responses with an overall satisfaction rating of 2.5 out of 3.0 stars.  We had several very positive suggestions for making them even better and we will be looking at those and tweaking the process so we can make the experience even better.

We also hosted two Regional Leader In Me workshops this week.  Some of our Lighthouse Team members were able to give a tour to the teachers and principals who were in attendance.  The attendees were very impressed with our school and all the children.  There were several positive comments made about how nice, polite, and well behaved the students were.  So, high five to all!

We also hosted Missoula Theater this week. Several of our students have stayed after school and stayed late in the evenings to put together this show.  I am so excited to see this show as it is advertised as a show that helps us discover that our differences need not stand in the way of friendships.  With an island filled with goats, an all-animal band, and hula dancing chameleons, I'm sure it will be entertaining.  Doors open at 7:30.  The show starts at 8:00 and it's just $5 for a family to attend.

Next week the PTA has Santa Shop in the library.  This is a chance for your child to shop for presents for others.  Please see information from your homeroom teacher on shopping times.

Don't forget our Evening With the Arts on Thursday the 12th at 6:00.  All the students have been working hard to showcase their artwork through visual art, music, and dance.  It promises to be a fantastic evening!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Yealey Families,

I hope you've had a great couple of weeks.  It has been a very busy time at school.  This week our 5th grade experienced Colonial Day at Yealey.  It was an incredible day  - just like always!  Students dressed in colonial period outfits.  They made candles, cross-stitched, practiced calligraphy with ink wells and feather, and enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast to name just a few of the opportunities they experienced.  I had a great time practicing calligraphy with a few of my 5th grade girls.

After I left 5th grade, I walked into our Technology/Makerspace to work with some 3rd graders who were coding cubelets.  They had coded the cubelets to travel 15 inches in 1000 milliseconds.  They were working on finding the speed of their cubelets.  I couldn't believe how much they had learned about coding, physics, and mathematics.  I could not have been more impressed!

We completed our school-wide student led conferences last week.  This is such an accomplishment!  We knew that this would be a big undertaking for us as a school.  There are some teachers who had tried these already and some teachers who weren't sure how these could possibly work.  But we decided as a staff to take a leap of faith and try them. I am very happy that we did.  I heard such positive comments in the hallways as families were leaving.  We know we have lots of room to grow with this process and we would really like to get your feedback to help guide this work. Please take a minute to complete this 6 question survey to give us your feedback.  THANK you in advance!!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and an even better Thanksgiving.  Enjoy your break next week with no school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  We will see you back at Yealey in December!

Hi Yealey Families,

I hope everyone had a fun but chilly Halloween night.  I know the kids had a fun time here showing off their costumes during the parade.  Thank you to the parents who came and watched the parade for being flexible as we moved it inside to the gym.

I was lucky enough to be a substitute in a 4th grade classroom today.  I love spending this time with the students and being back in the teacher role.  Our teachers are amazing and do a tremendous job each day!  Be sure to let them know how much we appreciate them when you have the chance!

Next week we have no school on Tuesday for election day.  Teachers will be here for professional learning on that day but students do not come to school because Yealey is a polling place.

The PTA would like to have feedback on their recent event.  Please take this survey and let them know what you think.

Hi Yealey Families,

I hope everyone has had a great week.  We have had lots of learning here!  I have been able to be in classrooms watching students problem solve real world math situations.  I love talking to them and hearing how they break apart problems and try to justify their answers.

The Fall Festival was a huge success last week.  Thank you to everyone on the PTA who volunteered to bring this great event to Yealey.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Next week we will have our annual costume parade on Thursday morning.  If you'd like to view the parade please line the sidewalks at 9:00 am.  Spectators will not enter the building but will just watch the parade as the kids parade down the sidewalk as long as weather will permit us parading outside. Please remember no weapons are permitted as part of any costume.

Student led parent conferences are coming up soon.  Please be looking for sign up information from your homeroom teachers.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hi Yealey Families,

I hope everyone had a great Fall Break.  It's always nice to have a chance to practice Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw.   This month we are focusing on Habit 2 - Beginning With the End in Mind.  Be sure to see our student created video explaining this habit on our social media accounts.  Beginning with the end in mind is about goal setting.  Have you set any family goals?  Ask your child about the goals they are setting at school.

Tonight is our Fall Festival hosted by the PTA.  It will run 5 - 8 and should be tons of fun.  The book fair will be open and there will be food trucks available for dinner.  Everything else is free of charge!  So bring the family and come enjoy some good fall fun!

Be sure to check out the Guidance Counselor page for information on next week's Red Ribbon Week themes.  Each day we will focus on making safe choices with lessons and fun activities like silly sock day on Monday.  Also, check out Mr. Rice's, assistant principal page for information on attendance and behavior data over the last couple of weeks.

Also, please be sure that the Acceptable Use Policy that was sent home at the beginning of the year has been signed and returned.  We are currently sending home another copy for anyone that has not returned this.  We need them asap.  And, also, if you receive a call from school that you aren't able to answer but that a message is left, please check the message before calling school to see what we are calling about.  Whenever I do an "all-call" during school hours we receive close to 100 phone calls within the next 20 minutes asking what the call was about and quite often people will say there is a message they haven't checked.  Obviously receiving all of these phone calls, ties up the phone lines and the office during that time.  It is one of the main reasons I try to avoid all calls during school hours. Any help you can give us with this would be appreciated!

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  I look forward to a full week in school next week!

Hi Yealey Families,

Well, I guess Fall weather is here.  I am so grateful for the extra days of Summer (my favorite season) and will be happy to have as many of them as I can!  We have had a great week here at school.  I was able to spend some time with 1st graders this week as they talked about Habit 2 - Beginning With The End In Mind.  What a great concept to make sure everyone masters!

I have also spent some time working with students in 3rd grade math.  I loved seeing them grapple with problems and trying to explain their thinking about the distributive property of multiplication.  Verbalizing this is sometimes so hard but is so very important in them solidifying their understanding.

State assessment results were released this week.  Last year, we had some areas of celebration and some areas to focus on and this year we have the same thing.  Last year we were one of just 4 schools in the whole district to receive an "other" classification (the only good category given).  This year the state decided not to give the same categories but do stars instead and will do the other categories again next year.  They also changed how they calculate the growth component of the score.  This year our math scores decreased which impacted our overall score category but since the growth component changed, we can't exactly compare it to last year's score.  But, overall, we have looked at the scores, small decreases in reading and social studies; small increases in writing and science, and have decided on a few instructional changes to make so that next year we can hope to see gains across the board.   I think it is unfortunate that so many of the other measures we use here to measure growth (STAR, Case, MRA, Resiliency Poll, etc.) aren't used to tell our story at the state level on our school report card because those showed great growth last year and what we have so far this year looks good.  We use multiple data points to make decisions and K-Prep is just one of them. I know it sounds very confusing. So, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.  Your individual student results will be given to you at conferences.

Be sure to check out our new page on this blog from Mr. Rice.  He is highlighting attendance and behavior data that looks awesome.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend.  Don't forget the PTA pumpkin sales and that Fall break is next Friday the 11th and Monday the 14th.  The blog won't be updated until after break.  Enjoy the break with family and friends!

Yealey Families,

I hope you've had a great week at home.  We've had a great week here.  The NKU dance troupe came and held a demonstration for our 4th and 5th graders that they really enjoyed.  The 4th graders spent today at the Zoo and had an amazing trip.  I love the pictures I have seen from their adventures!

I had the pleasure of having a second grade student read a book to me that he wrote.  I worked with some 5th graders on math problems and listened to a group discuss a text they were analyzing.  I love getting time with the students while they are learning!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  I will be experiencing homecoming as the mother of a daughter for the first time.  I have a feeling there will be a lot more prep time invested than I'm used to as a mother of boys.

See you next week,

Hi Yealey Families,

I hope you've all had a great week at home.  It's been amazing here.  We had lots of guests throughout the week.  Thank you to all the Yealey Ladies who were able to come in for doughnuts on Tuesday and Wednesday to start the day with their special child.  I know that means a lot to the children.  We had a total of 703 people attend over the two days!  That's an incredible turn out!  Thank you also to the PTA board and volunteers who were here late each night and early each morning getting everything organized.  The Title 1 information that was shared at the meeting is on our website if you are interested and here are the links to the two videos that were shown:  Moms are Special video and Pumpkin Fundraiser video .

We also hosted our Leader In Me Coach as she trained people to become coaches. They used our building as a learning lab.  It was a very positive experience and they were very complimentary of our school, the progress we've made with the 7 habits, and your kids! They were impressed with their manners and behavior as well as their progress with the habits.  I hope that you've all seen the invite to participate in the Family Challenge that has been posted on our social media.  If you'd like to participate please complete this sign up form.  We are taking up to 20 families and have about half the slots filled.  I am planning on completing it with my family - I'll keep you posted on our progress!

Yealey Families,

I hope you've had a great week at home and been able to stay cool.  This heat wave is unexpected but personally I love it!

We have been very busy at school and hopefully you've been able to follow along with some of the fun learning through our social media accounts.  We have fourth graders who "escaped" their classroom by showing some awesome problem solving and collaboration.  Third graders have started tackling the concept of multiplication. I have challenged them to try to use some of their reading skills to help them figure out some difficult concepts by looking at vocabulary and reading the explanations in their books.

We have a pumpkin fundraiser coming up through the PTA.  Be sure to look for information coming home about that.  PTA will again be sponsoring our Fall Festival and will continue to make this a free event for families to come and enjoy each other's company and have some fun.  Fundraisers like this help us to continue these awesome Yealey traditions.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hi Yealey Families,

It has been an awesome week at Yealey.  I have loved being in classrooms this week seeing students learn about place value, practice their writing skills, and coding/creating video games.  This week we started our school wide jobs and it's been awesome to see students stepping up and taking care of things around the building.

We have been focusing on reviewing the 7 habits this year and are going to focus on Habit 1 this month - Be Proactive.  Please take time to review this with your children - ask them about the habits.  Find out when they think they could be used at home.  I hope that your children will be able to show you all kinds of ways to show the habits.

Also, a friendly reminder from our financial secretary to please send in fee money with your child or in the mail as soon as possible please.  These fees are used to cover the cost of workbooks and classroom supplies.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Yealey Families,

I hope you've had a great week.  We have been very busy here. I have had the privilege of seeing students persevere and solve problems.  I love hearing them explain their thinking and work together!

We have NO SCHOOL on Monday for Labor Day.  Don't forget that Tuesday will be our first day of the week and that will be Active Bobcats day.  If your child is in Active Bobcats please be sure to pick them up at 4:45.

There is an important notice for Kindergarten parents from our nurses office on the Nurse/Clinic page.

Also, please see our PTA page for a link to a new program they would like to start.  They would like to get a list of parents together who would be willing to be our Yealey Ambassadors.  As an ambassador, you would just be available to new families who might have questions about being new to Yealey or the Florence area.  All you would need to do would be provide your preferred contact information to the PTA and if a new family comes in we will give them your info.  Then if they need something, they will reach out to you.  If you're interested, please click this link

Hi Yealey Families,

I hope everyone has had a great week!  It's been a great full week back to school.  We started our Reading and Math STAR testing this week.  We should finish up everyone next week.  This test gives us a beginning of the year benchmark for reading and math.  We use these scores to look at what the students remember from last year and where we need to go for this year.  We will take the test again to see how much we've grown and continue to let it help guide us.

I have really enjoyed the time I've spent in the classrooms this week.  I've been super impressed with the first graders increasing their reading stamina and reviewing the foundational reading skills. Our  kids definitely came back ready to learn!

As a reminder, please follow the parent pick up procedures that are listed on the back of your car tag and outlined in the agenda.  If you want to pick your child up after normal dismissal, then you will need to get in the car rider line or walk to school.  If you walk to school, just wait outside the gym doors and your child will be dismissed to you there. If you drive through the line, just wait in your car and we will bring your child to you.  We have tried to get our normal dismissal procedures in place this week - which means buses and cars roll out of the lot at 3:45.  But, we have had a lot of issues getting parent pick up students to the gym.  If you're picking your child up, please be sure you've called by 3:00 pm or sent a note in with your child.  We try to double check everyone before we let buses go, but if we don't know you're planning on being in line to pick up, we don't know to double check that your child is in the gym.

Also, please have patience with our buses.  We have two new drivers starting Monday so there could be delays as they learn their routes.  Hopefully once they start and get in the swing of things, we will have minimal issues.  Thank you!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Friday night football starts tonight - so basically I'll blink and it'll be Christmas!

Welcome Back Yealey Families,

We are back and excited to begin the 2019 - 2020 school year.  It was so nice to see all the smiling faces coming in the building Wednesday morning.  Our Chief Academic Office for the district, Jim Detwiler, was here as students arrived at school and he commented to me on how impressed he was with the students - everyone was so happy to be back.  And I know I was just as happy to see them!

As always, I was so proud to see how kind and excited the kids have been to their new classmates.  One student made all her new girl classmates friendship bracelets and had them ready by the first day of school.  Another student greeted me in the car drop off with stickers that he brought to give to a friend so that he could make his friend feel special.  These acts of kindness along with so many other things they do each day are why Yealey is the best place to be!

Even with one day this week without phones and internet, we hit the ground running.  Students have already started learning engagement strategies, setting up their Leadership Notebooks, and getting to know one another.  We've even had geometry and number talks started in 1st grade!

As we begin year 3 of implementing The Leader in Me program, be on the watch for some fun and new ways we hope to help bring the 7 habits home to you.  I think you will really enjoy some of the things we have planned.  All the students are focused on reviewing these habits now as all classes are teaching the first 8 days for their grade level.  Be sure to ask your child about the habits!

Please remember to be patient with transportation at this point. Our goal is to send buses off the lot by 3:45 but because of traffic and other issues at the middle/high schools, our buses have been late getting here.  So, please just give us a little extra time to get them home. We will be in a routine soon and everything will be running smoothly - especially once all the construction projects are complete, lol 😄.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Get out and enjoy the sunshine!

Yealey Families,
I have some news to share with you.  Mrs. Hiatt has decided to return to the classroom and will be teaching 5th grade at Mann Elementary next year.  She is doing this so that she can take a new position as Special Needs Program Director at her church.  She is very excited about the new position and really felt like it was something she was called to do.  But, that position and assistant principal are more than one person can take on.  Returning to the classroom as a teacher will allow her to do great things as the director and as a teacher!  We will all miss her terribly and I'm sure many students would like to say good-bye.  So, we will be having a going away party for her at our open library on July 9th.  If you'd like to attend and have some ice cream with us, please rsvp by emailing Mrs. Schroeder at debbie.schroeder@boone.kyschools.us with the number of people attending so that we can purchase enough ice cream.

I hope you are all having a fantastic summer!  I am getting ready to go on vacation - so follow our Bobcat's adventures on Facebook and Instagram and see if you can figure out where we are by the clues he gives you!  I will see you at the ice cream social to tell you all about our adventures!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

We have had a fun filled week here at school. Today has been especially fun with all the track and field festivities happening.  Thank you to all the parents who were able to come out and support this day.  State testing finished up on Monday.  I appreciate how hard the students worked to show everything they've learned this year.  We also completed our last round of principal's tests.  They have really grown in their writing skills and it shows!

As we wind down the year, please remember to return all library books.  Also, if you have medication that has been kept in the clinic this year, please come in and pick this up by May 30th.  Any medication left here after that date will be disposed of.

Next week we have lots of special events. Monday 4th grade is going to Frankfort.  Please have your 4th graders here by 7:10 and pick them up at 5:30.  There is NO SCHOOL ON TUESDAY because we are a polling place for the primary elections.  Wednesday will be club pictures.  So, if your child was involved in a club please send them in their club shirt if they have one.   Thursday is 5th grade promotion at 1:30 and that evening will be the talent show at 6:00.

This will probably be the last blog update for the year as next Friday will be a busy day of signing t-shirts and visiting with all the classrooms.  Please watch social media all summer for open library dates/times and any other updates.  Back to School Fair will be August 12th 4:00 - 7:00.  We will have our traditional pot luck.  Families with last name A - M should bring a side dish, N - Z should bring a dessert and school will provide water, lemonade, and hot dogs!

I hope everyone enjoys your weekend!  Have a safe and happy summer!!!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

I hope you've all had a great week.  We have been continuing to work hard here at Yealey!  Our 5th graders completed their DARE graduation today.  Another milestone of elementary school finished for them!

Next week 3rd - 5th graders will begin K-Prep (state testing) on Tuesday.  Please be sure to be on time for school during testing (5/7 - 7/13).  If a student is late, they will have to wait in the office until we have an adult free to test them before they can join their class.  Please be sure everyone gets a good night sleep, a good breakfast, and is ready to show off all that they've learned this year!

As we are nearing the end of the year, I wanted to remind you of our site base policy on student placement in classes.  Per our policy parents can submit a request to the principal to not have 1 teacher per child per year.  Also, if you have any other requests about class placement, those should come to me. This year, I will accept these requests until May 15th.  Last year, I had parents contact me in July wanting different things for their child that required me to change several classes around to accommodate the changes.  Per our policy I should have those requests by April 1 but I am extending the date this year.  Please email me any questions you have about this, renee.turner@boone.kyschools.us.

Thank you to Richard McFarland and Robin Engle for volunteering to run for site base.  They are your newly elected parent representatives for next year. We are still seeking a minority parent member.  If you are interested in this, please let me know.

Also, please take a moment to complete this survey (see below) for our Leader In Me growth.  We will use the results of the survey to make plans for next year and how we can continue to make our Leader In Me program the best that it can be.  It also help us report to leader.org the progress we are making.  Leader.org is an organization that we won a grant from that has paid for almost all of The Leader In Me program here at Yealey.  The more people who take the survey, the better the results are for us.  Thank you!

Hi Yealey Families,

I wanted to thank everyone who came out last night for our Leader In Me showcase event.  It was filled with so many wonderful projects and examples of all the great learning students have done this year.  The children were so excited to show off their successes and I love seeing them shine!

Please see below from Becky Courtney:

Yealey’s Title I Program Parent Survey will be coming home on Monday, April 29th.  Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts with us by completing and returning the Survey by Friday, May 10th.  We use this data to improve our Title I Program and services in the upcoming school year.  Your opinions and experiences are important to us.  Thank you in advance for your time and effort!

I hope that everyone is planning on attending our Color The Future Color Run on May 11th.  It is one of my favorite days of the year.  It is so fun to have everyone together enjoying some exercise!

Yealey Families,

I hope everyone had a nice Spring Break.  The weather was amazing and I just really enjoyed being at home.  It has been an awesome week back and we have hit the ground running to wrap up everything for the year.

We completed our end of the year STAR reading and Math benchmark tests.  All of the data looks really good as a whole school.  Every grade level's data increased and you can really see the hard work of all the students when you look at how far they've come from the beginning of the year.

We will be completing our end of year writing assessment and then we will have K-Prep, state testing, for grades 3 - 5.  I will send more info on dates for that soon.

We will also be sending home a parent survey next week.  This is something that we need to have completed for our Leader In Me progress.  Please be watching for that and I look forward to hearing from you!

Next Thursday is our Leader In Me Parent Showcase 4:00 - 7:00.  So, we have moved our SBDM meeting to Wednesday at 4:00.  Also, please be sure to go to the cafeteria and vote when you are here for the event.  We will have both SBDM elections and PTA board elections.  We are still looking for a minority parent to run for our minority parent position on SBDM.  If you are interested in that, please email me at renee.turner@boone.kyschools.us.

I hope everyone has a great Easter weekend.  Enjoy your family and friends.

Hi Yealey Families,

We have had a great week at Yealey - Lots of learning happening everywhere.  Fifth grade has had another amazing trip to Tremont, TN.  Please check social media to see all the great pics.  Fourth grade visited the Behringer Crawford Museum and had a great trip. The children were very excited to tell me about some of the awesome things they saw on that trip.

Next week is spring break.  We return to school on the 15th.  When we get back there will be lots of fun and important activities taking place.  Be sure to check your child's folders, the blog calendar, and the website for information about all these events.  One of these that I want to be sure you hear about is our Leader In Me Parent Night.  This will be held on April 25th. Information about specifics for your child will come from the classroom teacher.  I really hope everyone can attend.

On April 25th PTA will be holding their yearly elections.  We have several very important parent positions open.  The PTA board will have openings so, please email jamie.yealeypta@gmail.com to let her know if you're interested.  We also have two seats on our site base council as well as a minority parent seat open.  If you're interested in running for site base, please send me an email with a short bio about yourself and why you'd like to serve on site base.  I will forward these to the PTA so that they can hold the election.  My email is renee.turner@boone.kyschools.us

I hope everyone enjoys spring break.  I know there was lots of excitement here today.  I will see you all on the 15th!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

I hope everyone had a great week!  We have been very busy here. I have been very lucky this week and have seen six different classes work on math!  I love to watch students learn new concepts and problem solve.  I love the confidence they grow into as they learn to justify their answers and share their thinking with others.  These skills will serve them well!

Next weekend is our annual Craft Fair.  I hope to see everyone there.  My soon to be 87 year old grandmother will be there selling all kinds of crocheted items.  She loves to chat so be sure to say hello!

Kindergarten registration is Monday evening 4:30 - 7:30.  Please help spread the word to any future kindergartners in your neighborhood.

Have a great weekend!!

We have had a great week here at school!  Nice to see some classes get to the playground this week. Remember that this is a possibility each day, so be sure your child is dressed in layers and appropriate shoes for having fun outside.

We had a great evening last week with Kids Night Out and Bingo.  So fun to see people come together and play games.  We have lots of fun events coming up for the school and the district.  Our craft fair is March 30th  9:00 - 2:00.  It is always a great time with so many talented crafters in our school.  The district is holding an International Fair at Boone County High School on March 23rd.  Mrs. Tymensky, our world language teacher, wanted me to share this video that talks about this fun event,

Our spring pictures will be 3/26 and an order form will be sent home but there will also be one available on our website.

Kindergarten registration for next year will be Monday 3/25 at 4:30.

Remember there is no school tomorrow and hopefully that is our last day off until spring break.

Have a great weekend!

Dear Families,

Our school’s 2017-2018 School Report Card is now available online. We hope you will visit the site using the link below.

New School Report Cards were released in January 2019.  Visit https://raisethebar.education.ky.gov for more information on the full suite of School Report Card tools available to help inform parents and communities. KRS 158.6453 requires the sharing of the School Report Card annually with families and communities so stakeholders can have a clear idea of how well their school is performing. If you need help accessing or viewing your school’s report card, please contact the school.  And, as always, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me by phone or email, renee.turner@boone.kyschools.us

Have a great day!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

I hope everyone has had a good couple of weeks.  Time has flown since my last entry.  We have been extremely busy here at school.  Our mother son dance last weekend was well attended and it looked like everyone had a great time.  Thank you so much to all our volunteers who stepped up to make this event possible.

Everyone has completed their winter writing benchmark.  The scores for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade have been awesome.  Great progress has been made at all three grade levels.  I am still working on scoring K - 2 and will update you on that soon.

Basketball and cheer leading are underway now.  The month of March will be jam packed with these sports.

I am sure by now you have heard about the internet hoax Momo.  We are addressing this when it comes up by making sure students understand it is not real.  We are also not talking about this whole class if at all possible to avoid exposing students who may not be aware of it.

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

We did it!  One full week of learning has happened!  It's been great to be here each day and see everyone jump right back in the groove.  I have had the privilege of working with 3rd graders on writing, 5th graders on reading, and watching kindergartners work hard in PE class.  It's great to see the kids working hard and making great progress.

I have been  scoring the 5th grade principal test this week and I'm very pleased with the results.  They have done so much better than they did in the fall.  The only downside to this is they have written so much more than before that it's taking me longer to score them than they did!

We are looking at doing a parent training on Leader In Me next year.  We are thinking an online course with a couple of face to face meetings (1 at the beginning and 1 at the end).  We have lots of ideas but wanted to get some feedback from you first.  Please take a minute to do this 2 question survey to help us in the planning.  https://goo.gl/forms/ghCjRYoRs6anmdS63 Thank you!

I hope everyone has a great weekend with family and friends!

Yealey Families,

Hopefully we are all thawing out after this week of record temperatures.  I hope that is the last we see of those for a long time!  I am more optimistic that we will get a full week of learning in next week and I can't wait for that.

I have updated the calendar with some dates coming up over the next couple of months.  Please be aware that there was another typo in the agenda book.  We do have school on February 21st but we are closed on the 18th.  Hopefully your child has already corrected that in their agenda.  Be sure to check out the calendar below.

I hope everyone enjoys your weekend.  See you Monday morning!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

We have had a productive week when we've been here!  It feels like we've had 3 Mondays in one week with the delays and closings!

Third, fourth, and fifth graders completed the mid-year writing assessment this week.  I have graded the 3rd grade papers and am thrilled to report the kids made a ton of progress.  They will get their papers back next week and we will be going over the responses with them.  They will be able to update their goal sheets with their progress.

If the weather is extremely cold or if there is snow in the forecast please be sure to keep an eye on news channels for any school closings.  I will always do an all call when I get the official call from district but just to be on the safe side, be sure to double check if you didn't get a call but you think there could be a delay/closing.  Just better to be safe than sorry in case the call was missed or didn't get through correctly.

I hope everyone has a great weekend with family and friends.  See you all Monday - hopefully for a full week of learning!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

Amazingly enough we have made it halfway through January with no snow days.  This has given us a great chunk of learning time to start the school year.  Fifth graders have continued amazing us (and sometimes themselves) with their double digit multiplication skills.  I visited some first grade classrooms this week and really enjoyed hearing them read and I loved reading their writing.  Mid year first grade is such a great time for the light-bulbs in reading and writing to start coming on!

Our Leader In Me coach was here this week working with all the teachers on our Wildly Important Goals.  Every student in the building has a writing goal for themselves and everyone has a Leadership Binder to keep track of their goals and accomplishments.  The teachers had the opportunity to share with our coach the progress they've seen so far from the kids.  Our coach was very impressed with our progress and the things our kids are doing!  Be sure to ask your child about the 7 Habits and what goal they are working on in writing.

Yealey has been chosen as a school to participate in NAEP testing this year that is administered by the US Dept of Education.  This is a national test that is used to track how the United States is doing in key subject areas and the data creates the Nation's Report Card. The test is given to just 4th grade and the NAEP organization chooses which 4th graders will participate.  More information will be coming home with 4th graders so 4th grade families be sure to watch for that. Or, if you would like more information please visit http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/parents/2012469.pdf. or contact Melissa Taulbee at 859-282-3333 or at melissa.taulbee@boone.kyschools.us

I hope everyone has a great snowy three day weekend. Remember no school on Monday.  Stay warm!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

It has been great to be back to learning here for a full week.  This week I saw 5th graders working on double digit multiplication.  The great thing is they were learning what each number really represents and could verbalize. For example, in a problem like 57 x 32 when you are multiplying the 2 and 5, you are really multiplying 2 and 50.  So, the standard algorithm that we all learned when we were in school is something they will be able to not only use but understand why it works.  I loved hearing them explain this.  I also heard from some 4th graders who were researching Picasso in art class what made his pieces unique and some of the facts they learned about this famous artist in their research.

We have realized a mistake in the agenda books with our day off in February.  We are off on Monday, February 18th and have school on Thursday February 21st.  Please make note of this on your personal calendars and we will have students fix this in their agenda books.

I hope you all are able to cuddle in and watch the snowfall tomorrow.  Stay warm and enjoy the beauty!

Good Afternoon Yealey Families,

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone enjoyed their winter break.  My break was packed with one fun thing after another.  I love having the time to spend with family and friends but I was happy to get back to see all the kids the last two days!  Again, they really impressed me.  They came back like they had not been gone - ready to lead and learn!

We are focusing this week and next on reviewing the 7 Habits and our PAWS procedures.  Ask your child about the habits and how they plan to practice these.  I have attached the parent guide to the blog also.  Take a look at this for ideas on how to practice and reinforce the habits at home.

This is a great uninterrupted period of learning for us (barring snow days).  I am excited to see all the growth we will make with the kids in the next 3 months leading up to spring break.  Hopefully the weather can cooperate and give us a minimal amount of interruptions.

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend and I look forward to seeing you back Monday for a full week!
